our animals
As the only no-kill, non-profit 380-acre animal sanctuary of its kind serving Austin, San Antonio and surrounding Texas communities, SARA seeks by example to illustrate the value of companion animals; and thus the irresponsibility of allowing an unending cycle of reproduction, neglect and abuse of these animals. We have not waivered from our original goal of a true no-kill policy - the animals live out their natural lives regardless of age, temperment or health.

For example, we provide, or have provided, care for many animals with visual or physical impairments, such as Kristy, a dog without use of his legs; several blind dogs like Wobbles and Boo; and Reno, a Boxer who had his tongue severed, forcing him to be hand-watered.

our partnerships
Our focus on rehabilitating animals, which many in-city shelters do not have the time and space to allow, has fostered incredible partnerships. In the last year three years we have partnered with: Austin and San Antonio Humane Societies, Operation Kindness (please see their letter of support in the Downloads area of this page), Blue Dog Rescue, and Austin’s City Animal Shelter. These groups often trade one unadoptable animal for several of SARA's rehabilitated ones. Last month alone, almost twenty rehabilitated, healthy dogs were placed out of SARA into homes through partnering. When Houston’s Spindletop Rescue needed provisions after a flood, SARA called H.E.B. and had a truck full of food delivered. We have also partnered with Emancipet and SNAP, both mobile spay/neuter clinics.

Three years ago we partnered with PETA and the Humane Society of the United States, both which sponsored a reward, to find the perpetrators of a vicious crime against Reno, the dog mentiond above. We recognize that only through the power of partnerships will the end of pet overpopulation and abuse be realized.

our community
Over the years we have focused on our community relationships – not only for the help that it can provide SARA, in the form of volunteers and activism, but also the help that SARA can provide in return. This includes: sponsorship of Austin’s Doggy Depot held at Town Lake Hike & Bike trail – a water and snack depot for four-footed runners and walkers. The owners have a chance to learn about SARA and get more information on spay/neuter options as well as statistics on over population, the need to adopt, etc.

SARA previously sponsored Austin’s National Homeless Animals Candlelight Vigil with Austin Humane Society, Austin’s city shelter, and PAWS Shelter. That event promoted the community’s recognition of the more than 15,000 animals that were euthanized in Austin from over-population. We have also held numerous adoption events in both Austin and San Antonio.

recognition
We were honored with the 2001 Texas Interactive Media Award for Achievement in Public Service. SARA, and its efforts, have been showcased on numerous news programs in both San Antonio and Austin areas. People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) has raised recognition of SARA and animal abuse with their reward posting. Likewise, Southern Living wrote an article about SARA, which appeared in their November 2002 issue. See our associated press archives.
