SOCIETY FOR ANIMAL RESCUE AND ADOPTION
—January 2008—
Letter from the Director, Tracy Frank
Happy New Year SARA Supporters,
It's hard to believe yet another year has gone by- it seems like they're getting shorter and shorter. I think I'm experiencing life in dog years now! 2007 had its ups and downs: we placed and rescued over 200 animals and at the same time, we had to say goodbye to some of our long time residents. It seems odd without them. Just last month our mammoth hog Homer died in his sleep.
Homer lived a very long and happy life and was saved from the slaughterhouse so many years ago.
I don't want to say that it gets easier to deal with euthanasia and having to make the hard decisions about when to let an animal go, but it is something I've made peace with and it has made me more accepting of death as a part of the cycle of life with my human family as well. I lost my mother when I was a child and my father succumbed to a rare form of Dementia this past January. I'm actually thinking of having a "natural cemetery" for humans and animals when we move to a ranch out in West Texas. It's a growing movement that makes a lot of sense. It would be a good way to fund SARA. Check "natural cemeteries" on Google. I hope I do not appear morbid, but it's actually good for the environment; it takes lots of lumber and plastic to build an average coffin and dangerous chemicals are released into the environment from embalming procedures.
I think non-human animals should be afforded the same sort of dignified service people are allowed.
To that end we have a new Memorial Page on our web site. You can write your own memorial to your best friend. We had a lot of people request it.
Link to memorial page here.
Animals are true existentialists- they live in the moment and never worry about the day they will die or what tomorrow will bring, instead they live every day to the fullest. We should take a lesson from them.
So, thank you for your support and I hope you do not have to work like a dog in 2008, but you should definitely try to live like one!
Happy holidays from all of us at SARA and best wishes for the year to come!
As always,
Tracy

Rocky and Sunny
These beautiful Appaloosa horses are 6 years old and very friendly. You might say they have colorful personalities! Appaloosas are known for their vibrant coats and lively spirit. This breed was developed by the Native American Nez Perce people of the Pacific Northwest. They are prized for their intelligence as well as striking appearance. Sunny and Rocky are half brother and sister.
Rocky and Sunny are a little too smart. We've had to put special latches on all of the food storage sheds because Rocky figured out how to open them all and help himself to the feed and Sunny always turns the water faucets on when she wants a drink- even if the tubs are full.

Good Samaritans Help Not Only SARA, but regularly visit folks in nursing homes
Freddy Junior and Bo- These local celebrities keep very busy doing good deeds
Bo Doyle and his adopted dog, Freddy Junior are always eager to help raise money and awareness for unwanted animals and they make the lives of the residents of New Braunfels and Boerne nursing home residents a little brighter by visiting them each week.
Freddy is very talented and can perform many tricks and loves to ride on his own personalized float in parades and often makes guest appearances at regional events. Bo's pretty talented, too. He made Freddy's float and taught him everything he knows! Thanks Freddy Jr. and Bo!
Chloe and Cassandra find a permanent home at a home for residents living with Alzheimer's.
Chloe and Cassandra came to SARA when one of our volunteers, Kay Stahl, heard of their plight in the Fort Worth area. Cassandra is Chloe's mother and they had lived their entire lives on a ranch with a very loving elderly woman. Unfortunately, their caretaker was stricken with Alzheimer's Disease and was no longer able to care for them or herself. Her family had no choice but to get her in a facility that could care for her. Sadly, she soon passed away. With that said, this story has a very happy and fitting ending!
We took Chloe to one of our fundraisers and she caught the eye of Nancy, a representative of the Barton House Alzheimer's Home in San Antonio. Nancy somehow new that Chloe would be a perfect friend and companion to the residents of the Barton House, and she was right! In fact, it worked out so well that they adopted Cassandra too! Chloe and Cassandra live next door to each other in homes that have 16 - 20 residents. I personally took both girls to the Barton House and have visited them several times since they have been there. It truly warms my heart to see the smiles and joy that they bring to the residents and staff.
Now the girls will live the rest of their lives in a comfortable, loving home, that also has a doggie door to a large beautiful fenced yard. It certainly is not easy, physically or mentally, when you care for several hundred abused, neglected and abandoned animals everyday; however, successful stories like this one energize and inspire us to continue this much needed mission.
Thank you in advance for your support and generosity which allows us to continue to help the innocent animals that cannot defend themselves.
For The Animals,
Charlene Fournace
Adoption/Fundraiser Coordinator
