SARA's permanent dogs

overview
The dogs at SARA are like the cast of characters from the Muppets - all unique with special quirks and hang ups, and names which reflect their personalities. While over 400 of them are seeking a new home (see our adoption section), at least 200 will live at SARA for the remainder of their lives and are seeking sponsorship. Here are a special few.

Kristy: Kristy came to us when he was about a year old. He was born with "brain stem damage" according to a neurologist at Texas A&M. He will never be able to walk, but he is perfectly normal in every other way. He spends most of his time in his crib with his favorite buddy, Gizmo. He still enjoys playing with dog toys and rolling around in the grass and he loves a good bath. He is especially fond of Tracy, SARA's director, because he is the last one to watch her fall asleep and the first one to see her awake since his crib is kept in her room.

Gabby: was rescued by a woman in New Braunfels along with her puppies. Two died of parvo before we got the remaining pups and their mom. Although they are all very happy dogs, they are not very friendly to new people and must live at SARA.

Nigel & Felicity: Nigel (pictured) and Felicity are two pit bulls that were bred to fight other dogs. Both had their ears cut off with scissors. They love humans, but cannot be around any other animals and must live in their own enclosure.

Brad Pitt: Even cuter than the original, Brad is a little pint sized pit bull puppy with a funny under bite. He wandered up to SARA volunteers Aleia Schurtz and Tait Stahl?s house in the middle of the night and began scratching on their door. He was cut up pretty badly, and we think he must have been used in dog fighting. Brad is very sweet to people, but even at his young age, he tries to attack other dogs and must be kept in his own pen.

The wild dogs of SARA: We received a call about 2 years ago from a woman in San Antonio who had her dogs seized by animal control because she had over 70 within the city limits. She asked us to help, and we agreed to take her 5 least adoptable dogs. All five were totally unsocialized, and for all intents and purposes, feral. They would all pile together in fear whenever one of the staff tried to approach them. We had to catch them with a pole to even vaccinate and worm them. Now, all have been neutered and treated for heart worms. They hide out together during the day, staying near their individual doghouses. If startled, all four will cram into one Igloo doghouse! At night, when they think no one is watching, they run around the yard gathering all the bowls and toys. So in the morning it looks like a poltergeist has rearranged everything. Although they will never be pets, they are very happy here.
