SARA's rescued animals

overview
The rescued animals at SARA are some of our most special and fragile spirits, enduring pain, neglect and trauma that no pet should ever experience. Most will live at SARA for the remainder of their lives and are seeking sponsorship. Here we share a few of their stories...

Reno: Our most publicized case to date, a boxer named Reno was stolen from his owner, and had his tongue forcibly severed and mutilated with a wire. He could no longer drink or pant like a regular dog. PETA and the Humane Society both offered rewards to catch the perpatrator, but unfortunately the criminal was never found. He has since found another family who agreed to love and care for this special needs dog. See our Press section for more on Reno.

June Marie: Our second most publicized case is June Marie. She was a helpless puppy that literally ran for her life as she was shot four times by her "owner." She was the only survivor of this senseless act of cruelty - every one of her six brothers and sisters were needlessly shot to death. Why? The owner didn't want them anymore. Part of her jaw had to be removed and she lost a tooth, but otherwise she survived intact. See our associated press on June Marie ("Puppy Injured by Gunfire Needs Home".)

Even though June Marie's story aired on numerous San Antonio and Austin TV news stories, the person responsible for this heinous act was never punished. There are few laws that protect animals - and we want to change that.

Marley: Marley was found wandering down I10 near San Antonio dragging a long, heavy chain (with padlocks!). Our first rescue attempt was not successful because he was so frightened. We managed to catch him near a sandblasting business down the road and brought him to SARA. Marly's first evidence of abuse was the horrible chain, but it was clear when he got to the Sanctuary that he had been used for fighting. He must be kept separate from any other animals, but he's happy with human affection, food, and no chain.

Miss Kitty: Miss Kitty and her 5 puppies were going to be shot by their owner because she was eating the food earmarked for the Chihuahua he used for breeding. SARA intervened and brought the skeletal 25 lb. dog back to the sanctuary. The first day all she did was eat. She was very timid and would cower whenever someone got near her, but she's warming up to people and hopefully, one day, the memories of abuse will fade enough for her to be adopted.

Cornelia: Cornelia was brought to SARA after a motorist witnessed another car toss her out of a window while the vehicle was moving at 60 mph. The motorist was horrified and stopped her car to see if the dog was still alive. She raced the dog to a vet's office, where after extensive internal surgery, the dog survived. Cornelia was then brought to SARA. Cornelia is so gentle and loving, it's hard to imagine the type of person who could dispose of her like an apple core, left to rot on the road if not for the kind motorist who thought enough to stop.

Sara: Sara suffered unbelievable abuse. Another "fighting" dog, her ears were cut of with scissors, and she had cigarette burns covering so much of her body she looked bullet-ridden. She must be kept in her own spacious pen, but loves human affection, a good ear scratching and her kiddie pool. Like our other rescues, Sara needs a kind soul to sponsor her. Sara is featured in our media files (Sara, the dog) and was also featured in a local newspaper (The Rebellion, April 2003, SARA Saves Animals' Lives).
