fundraising for SARA

Our volunteers have come up with many creative and effective ways to raise funds for SARA - and you can too!

raffle tickets
SARA's annual raffle raises $20,000 for operating expenses, plus $10,000 for a lucky winner. We need help selling tickets. Only 300 $100 tickets are raffled, so the odds are pretty good! A $100 ticket purchase is a tax-deductible contribution to SARA, so a person can win even if he or she don't take home the big money. Drawings are held annually in December - when we most need the money.

host a garage sale
Got any junk around the house you are willing to part with? Instead of taking it to Goodwill, we welcome a garage sale on our behalf. It only takes a few hours of time, and it's a win-win situation - you get a clean house and the SARA animals benefit from the proceeds.

invite new members
Invite 5 friends to make a $25 donation to receive an annual membership and/or volunteer at the Sanctuary together for a day. » Find out more about the annual membership.

collection jars
Putting out collection jars in your community can really add up! Just $10 a month keeps a chicken well fed and $30 a month maintains a cat or dog. If we had just 100 people raising $30 a month through collection jars, that's $3,000!

organize a bake sale
Does your church, community center or even neighborhood bazaar enable you to host a bake sale table? While everyone is munching on your brownies, the donations raised from feeding them will feed many of our animals.

host a bazaar table
Host a table at your church or neighborhood's bazaar with crafts you make, and give the proceeds to SARA. One volunteer did this for a Christmas neighborhood bazaar and made gift cards, handpainted gift wrap, dog biscuits/recipes and other fun items. This effort raised $600 for the Sanctuary.

find auction item donations
Ask businesses to donate items or gift certificates to our semi-annual silent auction. Ideas include: manicures/pedicures, dinners/lunches, store credit/gift certificates, animal related items, speciality items, gift baskets, weekend getaways, etc. Email Tracy if you (or your business) have silent auction items to donate.

run or walk a marathon
Run or walk a half-marathon (such as Motorola's) and send out letters to your family and friends asking for a dollar or two dollars a mile, e.g. a half marathon is 13 miles = $13.00 or $26.00 a donor. One volunteer drafted a sample letter she used (please see the "related downloads" section on this page). Each mile represented a dog at SARA, and helped not only the runner but her supporters put faces/names to the miles run/sponsored.

create an animal angel tree
Create an "animal angel tree" at Christmas and ask each co-worker/family member/friend to donate $5.00 to an animal on the tree. Incentive is greater if you have a "gift" that can be won. This can be a neat "goodie basket" or a gift certificate to a restaurant. One member did this by cutting out pictures of SARA residents from old newsletters, gluing them to construction paper, and crafting an ornament with string. She bought a 3-foot Christmas tree and displayed it at work. People were able to pick their favorite animal to donate the money to and the incentive was a restaurant gift certificate that the member had donated.
