SARA stands for Society For Animal Rescue & Adoption. Founded in 1996, SARA has grown into one of the largest sanctuaries in the world, with no fewer than 650 animals in our care at any given time.
When outside adoption is not possible, our animals live at the sanctuary for the duration of their natural lives. Euthanasia is only employed in the true sense of the word: when an animal is suffering with no chance for recovery. No animal is ever killed for convenience. Our slogan has always been “Unconditional Life” and by that we mean that SARA seeks to save as many animals as possible regardless of species, special health needs, or temperament. Our Sanctuary
Running a sanctuary is a truly rewarding endeavor and one that takes a lot of hard work, both physically and emotionally and it takes a great deal of money to feed and care for the animals that come to us.
All animals receive quality food, neutering, protection from external and internal parasites, and excellent veterinary care. |
Our Animals
We try to find homes for all of our animals and work extensively with other rescues all over the US; we have taken in dogs from other countries as far away as the middle east and Malaysia. Of course, some animals do not fit into a conventional home setting but still deserve a loving safe environment. Many of the animals here fit that category and will remain with us as happy permanent residents.

Our Mission
Visitors, volunteers, partners and donors are believers in the SARA mission to help any animal that
comes to the sanctuary regardless of species, special health needs, or temperament.

Our Location
We are located 68 miles south of Austin and 42 miles east of San Antonio. Our sanctuary sits in the middle of beautiful sprawling Texas acreage that is dotted with majestic live oaks, mesquite trees, hackberries, prickly pear cactus, and is blanketed in spring with wildflowers.
The former cattle ranch is teaming with native fauna. Our cattle, horses, and donkeys share large wooded pastures with whitetail deer, bobcats, badgers, jackrabbits, cottontails, coyotes, diverse reptiles and amphibians, and incredible birds like crested caracaras (also known as Mexican Eagles), red-tailed hawks, and numerous other raptors, as well as several different types of owls and two types of vultures.
Migrating songbirds of all kinds stop at our property. Water birds like black-bellied whistling ducks, egrets, Egyptian geese, and great blue herons are frequent visitors to our ponds. In the summer cattle egrets can be seen following the cows around patiently waiting for insects to be stirred up as they amble through the grass. Starting in October, like clockwork, about 1,000 great-tailed grackles make SARA their fall and winter home.

Our New BarnOur big red barn is a multi-purpose building that provides shelter for some of our aging animals. It has a veterinary room, laundry, bath and guest quarters.
