In Memoriam
Fiona Mia
Fiona was the light of her owner's life. Since the day she came home (teeny tiny and riding in a laundry basket), Fiona was playful, spunky, loving and always ready to greet guests at the door.
She lived her 14 long years with her doting brother, Doogie. She will always be remembered for her beautiful soft fur, her playful nature, and most of all, the love she showered upon her mother.
R.I.P. sweet Fiona. All of the other Nagy and Nylen family dogs are waiting on the other side of the Rainbow Bridge for you.

In Memory of Carol Darby
a kind and gentle spirit who interacted with dogs as though they were people and treated them as such,
with dignity and respect, and above all, love.
Thank you, Carol, for treating our Hudson as if he were your own when you took care of him in our absence.
We love you, Carol. RIP dear one.

Pokie
Pokie was adopted from a Corpus Christi shelter over a decade ago and was a beloved member of the Harris family. He could frequently be found closely inspecting the floors for any discarded food; playing with his puppy, Joy; cuddling in bed with his dog mom; and receiving kisses on the snout from his tiny human, River. He was a loving, ever-present companion and will be deeply missed.
In loving Memory of Lola and Cooper, beloved companions of Gilbert Silva. Both lived happy long lives well into their teens and survived cancer and other ailments associated with aging.
They are missed very much.
They are missed very much.
MAYE
Maye lived at SARA for seven years. She hit the jackpot to spend her time there with Tracy and her staff while waiting for a forever family.
Maye made her way up to the Chicago area through a rescue transport where my sister met her at an adoption show. She quickly knew she had to make Maye part of her family.
Maye lived almost two years in Chicago with her human mom and dad and a (fun-loving but sometimes slightly annoying) younger dog brother. She was so loved and is greatly missed. We hope you found a comfortable sunny spot in dog heaven, Maye!

BOB
During an Alternative Spring Break visit, Catherine, one of the participating students, met Bob, a loving and huge Great Pyrenees at SARA. After persuading her dad to adopt him, we sent Bob off to Philadelphia where he became "the King of the Wissahickon and at home.” He lived many years as part of the Domanski family who now have two rescue dogs, Toby and Penny.
BAYLEE
Baylee was a super sweet little girl who gave the Newsom family over 17 years of companionship and love.

LARRY
I had been thinking it was time to adopt another old dog and when I first saw Larry on one of the SARA newsletters I immediately emailed Tracy and asked if he was available for adoption. I was thrilled when she said yes and made plans to fly to San Antonio the last weekend of January 2020. I’m so glad for the timing because the world shut down 6 weeks later and I would have never gotten to have this amazing dog in my life.
I was worried that after being at SARA for so long Larry wouldn’t be happy away from the pack and Tracy. I quickly became his “person” and whereas some dogs are food motivated or toy motivated, Larry was motivated by attention from people. Everyone who met him loved him, from my visiting stepdaughter and her husband to the staff at the vet clinic.
Larry was diagnosed with a lung tumor on May 4 and we worked with the vet oncologist to come up with a plan to keep him going as long as possible as long as he was having a good quality of life and seemed happy. Sadly, he let me know over the weekend of May 23rd that it was time. As always, he was gentle and kind right up until the moment he was gone. There was never a second that he didn’t know he was loved and a valued part of our odd little family.
Rest in peace, sweet Larry. You were a good dog.

JD
We miss JD so much every passing moment, everyday. He was such a sweet little boy.
JD was short haired and tan colored brown Labrador mix. He was very strong and active till the last days of his life. He followed a punctual routine everyday. He would eat, drink and take his regular walks usually once in the afternoon and sometimes late night. Although, he did like his long naps during the day; especially the morning naps. He was an outdoor dog for most of his life and loved basking in the sun in the afternoon. He liked staying around everyone, especially when we had our family movie times in the evening.
|
This year, we even travelled to South Padre Island together in a camper. He almost walked away; one time while we took him out for an evening walk. It was surprising as he walked off quite a bit. We all had a nice chuckle saying JD decided to head off home without us and took off.
Oh! Miss that good ol’ boy so much. He was such a sweet carefree boy; very self sufficient and took care of himself quite well. He was such a sweet and easy dog to handle. Towards the end, his back legs were failing and he was losing considerable amount of weight. He needed some assistance with his back legs to get to the backyard deck. He still managed walking around the house himself. He gave us the most glorious 14 years of great and loving companionship. He left us on Sep 21, 2020. It was very hard to see him shutdown and go away. He went quietly into peaceful slumber into the woods to meet his brother, Charlie Brown. I am happy he is pain-free and in a better place now. I envision him running around with Charlie Brown in the woods of heaven! Becky, Michael and Debashree |

SIMBA
How fortunate we are to have had Simba in our life! He greeted us every morning with a tap dance and little circles that filled us with joy. He taught us unconditional love, and no amount of shenanigans ever derailed the love we had for him. He loved going on walks, bike rides, and hikes and would always put a smile on people’s face. During his senior years, he sometimes had a burst of energy on cold days when he would start racing us playfully and we just burst out in laughter at his puppy-like way to run. We miss him dearly. |
POCO
In Loving Memory of Poco, 2004-May 9, 2018. Our dear little boy, you were so loved every day of your life. Now free from pain, run and play with happiness in your new home, lovingly cared for by angels. You will always be a part of us in our hearts. Love, The Pingrees, Harlan, Dianne and Mia |
BELLA
My beloved family member, cat Bella, died January 23, 2019. She was 15. She died from salivary cancer. Bella’s nickname was “Queenie.” She traveled to Texas with me, her human mom, and her 3 cat brother’s from California. She adjusted (somewhat) to her 5 Texas sisters and brother, four of which were born feral and one who was abandoned by a neighbor. Bella was super cuddly, talkative and beautiful. Sleek black shorthair and golden eyes. I miss her terribly and keep looking for her until I remember she is gone from this life. Love from your human mom, Eugenie Baranoff |
SOLOMON
In memory of Solomon. You left us too early. Your special spirit touched our lives and will live in our hearts forever. Stephen and Rhoda Moss and your mother, Piper |
MURRAY HOLLEY
In memory of Murry Holley, a wonderful father and grandfather, and lover of animals and nature. With love from The Hoffmans |
DUSTY SPRINGFIELD
In loving memory of our sweet, beautiful, deaf girl, Dusty Springfield. She was the best dog and we were lucky to have her in our life and lucky to have SARA and Tracy there to help us when we were in times of need with her. So grateful to have her back for the last year of her loving life. We miss her, every day. SARA Sanctuary is a godsend and a special haven for all of the world’s creatures. <3<3<3
TYLER
In Loving Memory of Tyler. Your furbaby momma misses you but is so happy you are at peace and probably still getting into trouble. You will be forever missed. Now go run and play with Katie! A memorial contribution has been made from the Harkins Family.

KIND WORDS
PATTI FOWLER
Memorial in Honor of the Life of Patti Fowler, a wonderful mother and friend who loved all animals. BLANCA
In memory of Blanca. Memorial contribution made by Lisa Jones. RAJA
In memory of Raja. Memorial contribution made by Shamila, Scheel, Nadia, Sabrina and Raja’s mates, Leila, Sadie, Pepsi and Sonee. Raja gave us nine wonderful years – there was never a dull moment with Raja as he was everywhere and in everyone’s business! He was the life of every party we had, in the pool, playing with his tennis ball and socializing with every guest … and then suffer from a hangover the next morning. Who said that dogs don’t have a personality? Raja was Mr. Personality and incredibly well-known amongst our friends, a friend to all. Raja is missed every day and will always remain a part of our family. Although, we have four other pets, Raja is irreplaceable and his absence is felt by not just us, but also by his four-legged mates. Love you, our dearest friend and hope its beautiful wherever you are…and pouring tennis balls! TOFU
Memorial contribution made by Nicole Martin, Clare Wuellner, Monica, Mueller, Kelli Soika, Agnes Savich, Jennifer Riha, and the Jones family in loving memory Tofu. Our beloved Tofu was with us for almost 13 years. PEPPER
In Memory of Pepper, Parker’s Favorite! “I never would have known love, if it hadn’t been for Tracy” |
KOKO
In memory of Koko. Memorial contribution made by Scott and Melissa Wu. Koko was the faithful companion to our good friend Nick. For years, they started off their day walking along the beach & enjoying the Florida sun. Nick did everything to make sure Koko’s life was happy & full of love — especially in her later days. There’s no replacing Koko but Nick will keep her spirit alive through his good works for other animals in need. KIRBY
In memory of Kirby. Memorial contribution made by Dorothea Morris. Kirby was the light of our lives for almost 13 years and we miss her so much we still have a difficult time thinking about her. She gave us a laugh a day and probably extended our lives through her love and humor. There may never be another like her but we tried by rescuing a tiny min pin that looks and acts very similar. Wish us luck. EARL
Memorial contribution made by the Trimble Family in loving memory Earl. Our precious 4-legged friend and family dog, Earl, died this afternoon at age 14. We are so very sad at his passing but glad that he was fortunate enough to be rescued and given a home at SARA, where we we were able to find him and give him a family home for his final years. Earl brought so much joy to our lives. We are grateful for everything that Earl brought to our lives and we will miss him so very much….Always in our hearts you will remain our dear friend and beloved member of our family. Thank you for coming into our lives. Until we meet again, dear Sheepy-Man. SALVADOR
Memorial contribution made by Denise Fischer in loving memory Salvador. Salvador was at least 18 years old. He was with his parents, Jeanine and Gary Barron, for 6 years after coming from a hospice patient who rescued dogs and cats. Jeanine was a volunteer for this special lady who entrusted Salvador’s care to her. Salvador drew attention because of his small size, big ears, and silky white coat. He could be a quirky little pistol at times and loved very much. We will miss him. BRUISER
Memorial contribution made by Emily Doolan in loving memory of Bruiser. Bruiser was born on July 14th, 1999 in Vallejo, California and died on March 17th, 2012 in San Antonio, Texas. For 13 years, he was my Uncle Larry’s companion, protector, travel buddy, and best friend. He loved walking in the woods and on the beach, swimming, playing with stuffed animals with his sister Betty, and naps in a cool, breezy spot. His human and canine family and friends in Kansas City, Missouri will miss him very much. |

Memorial contribution made by Shamila Nayar and family in loving memory of Pepsi. In memory of our “gentle soul”, Pepsi, who left us so soon and so suddenly on Feb 9, 2013. We still remember the day, 9 years ago, when we got you and your sister, Sadie. I held you in my arms when you were only 6 months old and you snuggled so tightly against my neck that it was hard to put you down – you were destined to come home with us, and what joy you brought into our lives! We shall miss you when the telephone rings – how you hated that ring and barked incessantly! We shall miss you at feed time – how you loved your food, especially chicken and cheese. We shall miss you walking your circles in between the chairs around the breakfast table – never understood that! We shall miss trying to take you for walks – what an impossible feat it was. And, how excited you were when dad came home; you were his best buddy, never letting him sleep at night with your shenanigans! We shall think of you on the stormy nights when the thunder scared you so much that you jumped into any bed you could find. How you loved company and were the first to greet every guest. We called you “Mr. 2-step” because you always got locked out and never barked! We had to constantly look for you at bed time and there you were outside the patio door, quiet as a mouse and waiting to be let in! Oh Pepsi, you were the best, an angel and the easiest pet of all. Never to be forgotten, always missed and hope you are in a place where there is plenty of cheese! Home will not be the same without you; Sadie is looking for you, her play mate and brother. Leila wonders where you are. Dad misses his walk buddy and at nights. Peanut misses her fights with you in the media room. Nadia was so bent on taking you to DC with her. And, mom misses you at feed times. |
